The purpose of this guide is to provide information to new and existing Mac users on how to operate their BJU supplied Mac. Please read this guide in its entirety before using your Mac and keep it accessible while you are becoming familiar with your device. This guide applies to all Mac users and contains information specific to BJU.
BJU Mac Usage Policies
Below are key usage policy guidelines and best practices for using a BJU supplied Mac. This list is not exhaustive. All users must comply with all current BJU and IT usage policies outlined in the employee handbook and on the intranet.
Remote work
At this time, BJU IT cannot fully support remote use of Macs (such as working out of town). Some problems can only be resolved in person. For this reason, the use of Apple computers for fully remote employees is not recommended. If you do use your Mac off campus, you must use the provided Global Protect VPN to access the campus network and for added security overall.
Encryption and Recovery
For data security, regulation compliance, and insurance purposes, all BJU computers are encrypted. This means that data cannot be accessed on the computer unless you log in. If you forget your password or need to recover data, you must contact IT.
App Installation
Apps that are approved to be installed are available in the BJU App Store or in Self Service + apps. See the Self Service + section of this guide. Any apps not included in these locations must be requested and approved by submitting a service request ticket. No user is allowed to install an app on a BJU computer, even if the app is "free" and/or does not require admin credentials to install. Please do not purchase apps and then ask for IT to install them. Apps must go through a licensing and security review.
Data Backup and Accounts
To prepare for accidental data loss or computer failure, all users are strongly encouraged to use either OneDrive or iCloud to back up their data. You must use your BJU account to log in. Do not log in with your personal account. Also, never save BJU business data or PII (personally identifiable information) of BJU students, employees, or customers to your personal accounts.
About Jamf Connect
Jamf Connect is what powers the BJU login screen on every BJU Mac. Your BJU network account and your password on your Mac are two separate passwords. For your convenience, Jamf Connect works in the background to ensure your network and Mac passwords are the same. Jamf Connect verifies that your passwords are the same when you sign in and continues to do so every hour while you are logged in.
First Time Login
When using your Mac for the first time, you should see a Bob Jones University login screen. Your Mac will already be encrypted, so if you see only a Mac username and password field without any BJU branding, check to see if there is someone who has previously logged into the computer and ask them to log in first to unlock it. This is an Apple security feature. If no one else has previously signed into the computer, contact IT Support to unlock the Mac.
Below is the step-by-step guide for logging into your Mac for the first time.
1. If you are off campus, connect to a secure Wi-Fi network using the Wi-Fi icon at the top right of the screen or use an ethernet (network) cable.
2. On the sign in screen, enter your full email address (e.g., jdoe@bju.edu, jdoe@bjupress.com) and press Enter.
- If you enter only your username (such as jdoe), you will be redirected to a Microsoft login. To try again or reconnect, click the refresh button at the top right of the screen.
3. Enter your password on the next screen.
- If you forgot your password, please contact IT to have your password reset.
4. Accept the "BJU Computer System Usage Agreement." You can press Enter twice to accept.
5. Enable any accessibility settings needed and click Continue or click Not now.
6. Your account will be created, and you will be logged into your Mac.
7. Restart your computer to become familiar with the login process after a restart.
Logging in after a Restart
After a restart, you will see a different login screen with only a username and password field. This is the FileVault login screen. Only users that have logged in previously can unlock a Mac from the FileVault login screen.
1. At the FileVault login screen, enter your username (jdoe, not jdoe@bju.edu) and your password.
- Note: If your login fails to unlock FileVault, see if there is another user who has logged in to it previously and can unlock it, or contact IT.
2. After you log in, a progress bar will appear showing the progress of booting into MacOS.
3. When you see the BJU login screen, follow the “First Time Login” instructions above.
Self Service Options
Installed with Jamf Connect is the new Self Service +. You can access Self Service by clicking the tilted + icon at the top right of your Mac. You will have the following options:
- Connect – This option prompts Jamf Connect to verify that your network and Mac password are in sync. (This action triggers automatically every hour.)
- Change Password – This is the preferred method for Mac users to change their password. See the Password Change section of this guide.
- Get Software – This option opens the Self Service + app where you can install approved apps and other services. See the Self Service + section of this guide.
- Get Help – Opens a browser to the itsupport.bju.edu page.
- Request Admin Privileges – This option is only for pre-approved users who require admin privileges to do certain aspects of their job. It allows admin access for a specified time limit.
- Preferences – Shows some pre-configured settings. For admin use only.
- About – Shows version info, log collecting options, and licensing info.
- Quit – Closes Self Service + and Jamf Connect (automatically reopens after closing).
Self Service +
Self Service + contains 5 tabs on the left pane as listed below.
- Home – Lists general information about the health of your device and featured apps.
- Bookmarks – Lists important BJU websites.
- Catalog – Lists several categories of BJU approved apps that can be installed.
- Notifications – Important notifications will be displayed here.
- Updates – Available updates for MacOS or apps may be displayed here.
Password Change
There are several ways to change your password for your BJU account: however, only one way is the best way.
Password Change Via Self Service
This is the preferred way for Mac users to change their password.
1. Click the Self Service + icon (+) at the top right of your Mac's screen and then click Change Password.
2. Sign in with your full email address as your username (ex. username@bju.edu/bjupress.com),
3. Perform the two-step verification with your phone.
4. Enter your new password and confirm; then Submit.
5. Click the Done button at the bottom of the screen. Do NOT close the screen without clicking done.
6. When Self Service + pops up, sign in with your new password
7. Enter your old password when prompted.
Your password is now changed and synced with your Mac password.
Password Change Via Browser or Another Computer
1. After changing your password via the browser or when using another computer, log into your Mac.
- If your Mac restarted and is on the FileVault screen, you will need to use your old password to unlock FileVault first.
2. After logging into your Mac, you will be prompted to enter your old password; this is also the same password you used to unlock FileVault.
Your passwords should now be synced. NOTE: If you were already logged in to your computer when you changed your password, you will be alerted within an hour that your passwords no longer match. Enter your old and new passwords as prompted.
BJU Custom Apps
Global Protect
Global Protect VPN is installed on every Mac. You must use this app when connecting from off campus. You can access it by clicking on the globe icon at the top right of your screen. The normal VPN portal is rvpn.bju.edu. After clicking connect, you will be prompted to sign in with your BJU credentials.
Self Service/BJU App Store/Self Service +
These three names refer to the same app. For more information about this app, please see the Self Service Options section of this guide.
Office Apps
All of the Office apps are available on your BJU Mac. If they are not installed, you can install them via Self Service. After the first launch of any Office app, you will be prompted to log in with your BJU credentials.
Papercut
This app controls access to printing on-campus. This is not used for most printers in BJU Press buildings.
Microsoft Defender
This app ensures that all of your files are free from malware to protect yourself and others. It will also run an antivirus scan every 24 hours.
