Adding an External Link to the Navigation Bar

You can use the Redirect Tool to add a link in the Navigation Bar of your Canvas course to an external website.
 
  1. Open the course, then select Settings at the bottom of the navigation bar.
  2. At the top of the Settings page, select the Apps tab.
  3. Select Filter by name and type in "Redirect Tool."

  4. Click on the app, then select Add App.
  5. Fill out the form that appears:
    • Under Name, type what you want the link text in the navigation bar to be.
    • Under URL Redirect, type in the URL of the website you want to open when users click on the link.
    • Set the Force open in a new tab check box to reflect whether you want the page to open in a new tab or inside Canvas itself.
    • Check the Show in Course Navigation check box.

  6. Click Add App.
  7. Refresh the page. (Ctrl+R on your keyboard, Command+R if you're on a Mac, or click the rotating arrow at the top of your browser next to the address bar)
  8. Select the Navigation tab at the top of the Settings page. The link you added should be in the navigation list there, usually at the bottom of the upper section.


     
  9. Drag the link to wherever you want it to appear on the navigation bar.
  10. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save.

The link should now appear in the main navigation bar of the course.
